KILLER QUEEN - PRESS RELEASE
''KILLER QUEEN, A TRIBUTE'' CD FEATURES ''AMERICAN IDOL'S'' CONSTANTINE MAROULIS, JOSS STONE, SUM 41, JOSH KELLEY, GAVIN DE GRAW AND MORE
(Burbank, California –– July 11, 2005) Queen: They are still the champions of the world. And when a cross-section of rising artists honor one of the great bands of all time, there's only one result. They will rock you. This summer, Hollywood Records is set to release ''Killer Queen, A Tribute,'' which boasts new versions of 14 classics by the immortal British quartet. The CD arrives in stores August 9.
There's never been a Queen tribute album like ''Killer Queen.'' Comprised mostly of musicians born after Queen had begun its amazing run on the charts beginning 30 years ago, the album certifies Queen's enduring legacy with new generations of artists. Among the CD’s highlights, ''American Idol'' rocker Constantine Maroulis reprises his show-stopping rendition of ''Bohemian Rhapsody.'' Maroulis first performed the song as a Top 10 finalist on the just-concluded fourth season of ''American Idol.'' On the new CD, Maroulis teams up with the cast from ''We Will Rock You,'' the hit British musical extravaganza based on the music of Queen, now playing at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel.
Other artists and songs featured on the CD: Gavin DeGraw with ''We Are The Champions;'' Jason Mraz performing ''Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy'', Eleven featuring Josh Homme singing ''Stone Cold Crazy'', Flaming Lips doing their own version of ''Bohemian Rhapsody;'' Josh Kelley singing ''Crazy Little Thing Called Love,'' Rooney with ''Death On Two Legs;'' Jon Brion performing ''Play The Game;'' Shinedown's rendition of ''Tie Your Mother Down;'' British teen soul singer Joss Stone with ''Under Pressure;'' Los Lobos singing "Sleepin' On The Sidewalk;" Be Your Own Pet with ''Bicycle Race;'' Ingram Hill doing ''39;'' Breaking Benjamin with ''Who Wants To Live Forever;'' Antigone Rising singing ''Fat Bottomed Girls'', and punk band Sum 41 singing ''Killer Queen.''
Said singer Josh Kelly, who covered Queen’s ''Crazy Little Thing Called Love,'' ''Here I stand having covered one of my favorite songs of all time. It would seem that the music of Queen plays a major role in everyone’s lives.'' Added Ingram Hill’s Justin Moore, ''Queen's music showed me that it's not impossible to write a beautiful melody inside of a rock song, which is kind of the opposite of most rock music today.''
From the moment of Queen's recording debut in 1975, the popularity of the band has not waned. They sold millions of albums, toured the world many times over, and though lead singer and songwriter Freddie Mercury died in 1991, Queen lives on. Guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, joined by singer Paul Rodgers, have been on a sold out European tour over the last few months, with fans packing stadiums from Paris to Prague, from Leipzig to London. The band is set to play four more outdoor shows this month in Lisbon, Cologne, Arnhelm in Holland, and London's Hyde Park. Moreover, discussions are underway for the band to tour America for the first time in two decades.
Queen's music has spread beyond the realm of the band itself. The musical ''We Will Rock You'' continues to set box office records in London's West End with concurrent productions running in Moscow, Madrid, Germany, Las Vegas and Australia. The Used/My Chemical Romance's one-off charity rendition of ''Under Pressure'' became the #1 most played at KROQ and racing up the charts at alternative stations nationwide.
