You may not know just exactly who Heather Bright is, but chances are that you would’ve heard one of your favorite stars singing her songs. Bright has written for the likes of Justin Bieber, RedOne, Britney Spears, Usher, Akon, and even Michael Jackson, and in a new interview, she’s lifted the lid on some of the shady songwriting practices that go on behind the scenes, naming names and proving that Beyonce isn’t the only one cashing publishing cheques that she didn’t earn.
Free-Wired: But, like, with publishing deals and everything, don’t the composers – the songwriters and producers – make more than the actual singers?
HB: It depends on who you are. Rihanna takes publishing, Justin Bieber takes publishing, Kanye West takes publishing. On all the stuff that they don’t write, they take publishing.
Bright, who wrote Justin Bieber’s hit “Somebody to Love”, then admitted that she had no idea how the Tween sensation got a writing credit on the song.
Free-Wired: So how did Justin Bieber get a writing credit on “Somebody to Love”?
HB: Umm… How did he get a writing credit on it? That’s an interesting question. I don’t know. (laughs)
None of these names are particularly surprising. Most of 808s & Heartbreak always sounded much more like a Kid Cudi record than it did a Kanye album.
But Bright also found some time for praise, voicing her admiration for Lady GaGa and other artists who make the time to actually write their own songs amid a busy schedule.
HB: You can’t be Rihanna and be producing and writing records. You just can’t be doing that. You just won’t have time. All the appearences, the performances, and the ‘this,’ and the ‘that,’ you gotta show up to record, you gotta promote the album, go on tour. I mean, people like Lady Gaga – It’s amazing that they can find time to write! They have to write on tour, all of those artists who actually write!
Heather’s most recent writing credit is for Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale cut “Trouble For Me”, which, unlike Bieber, does not have a writing credit from Britney. Lady GaGa proves that you can write your own songs if you make the time for it, and Britney is a shining example of not taking credit for something you didn’t do. Too bad some other artists aren’t so honorable. |
