Working alongside Iraqis has changed his opinion. He said he thinks they share the same goals Americans have.
“Whether or not we had a right to come, we’re here and we’re making it work,” he said. “We can’t just run and go away.”
Other sailors worry about the security of working alongside armed soldiers whose country has just been conquered.
“Some of them are real hostile, some of them are real nice,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class George Perez, 23, from Texas.
A few of the Iraqi guards have discovered Michael Jackson as “their music god,” Perez said, and they sing and imitate the pop king’s dance moves. “They want to be like people in the United States,” he said.
The Iraqi marines guarding the terminal are mostly from southern Iraq, especially Basra. Some are former soldiers, Iraqi and coalition officials said.
Many smiled and joked easily with their American guests.
