Official music programme of the 2006 FIFA World Cup
22 March 2006
by OC 2006 FIFA World Cup
In 1984 his record company threw him out. And if the rumours are to be believed, fewer than 1,500 copies were sold of his second record upon its release. The few critics who actually took the trouble to listen to him decided that “he doesn’t sing, he just mumbles.”
Who ever would have thought, back then in the early 80s, that Herbert Grönemeyer would end up writing and singing the official anthem of a FIFA World CupTM?
On 9 June, right before the Opening Match in Munich, Herbert Grönemeyer – perhaps the most popular singer in Germany – will showcase the official anthem “Celebrate the Day”, in what will no doubt be a very emotional performance. “Herbert’s hymn”, as fans will probably call it, will be released on 12 May as part of “Voices”, the official album of the 2006 FIFA World Cup GermanyTM, which will also include the official FIFA World Cup song “Time of our Lives” by Il Divo.
Top international quartet Il Divo have yet to make their breakthrough in Germany, but in the USA, the group, made up of Sebastian Izambard, Carlos Marin, David Miller and Urs Buhler, have already had a number one chart hit with their fusion of classical music and pop. In the UK, their debut album sold 1.3 million copies.
In the German-speaking world at least, Grönemeyer requires no introduction. His album “Bochum” (1984) was in the German charts for 79 weeks, and hits such as “Flugzeuge im Bauch”, “Bochum” and “Alkohol” always get the entire audience singing, whether he is playing in a concert hall or a stadium. Born in Göttingen but brought up in Bochum, where he is a fan of the local 2. Bundesliga high-fliers VfL Bochum, Grönemeyer surprising only had his first number one hit in 2002 with the single “Mensch”. He was also the first non-English speaking singer to be invited to do an MTV “Unplugged” session.
As well as Grönemeyer and Il Divo, international stars such as Shakira, Eros Ramazzotti and Youssou N’dour are performing songs on the “Voices” CD. At previous FIFA World Cups, Ricky Martin sang on “La copa de la vida” in 1998, whilst Anastacia performed “Boom” in 2002.
