On the radio: Talk show host Michael Jackson back on the air
(He joins the staff of the new talk-standards station KGIL.)
Michael Jacksonis fond of the quote he attributes to Larry King: "I never learned anything when I was talking." And with that thought in mind, he will walk into a new radio studio Oct. 29 to start the next chapter in his radio career.
Best known for a long run on KABC/790 AM (1966-98) and a more recent shorter stint on KNX/1070 AM, he said he's "excited" to be working with Saul Levineand Mt. Wilson Broadcasters on what will be the new 1260 AM – KGIL.
Jackson will be on live 9 to 11 a.m. weekdays and repeated in afternoon drive, 5 to 7 p.m., a wise move if you consider people driving home may be at work and miss his morning edition.
Jackson's not one to waste time on labels, such as liberal vs. conservative, etc. He's earned his reputation, like King, as a listener. Unlike King, who doesn't research guests, Jackson does his homework. Of course, you'll know his point of view, but the ever-polite Jackson always gives his guest the chance to speak beyond mere sound bytes.
"I have always enjoyed people I disagree with. It provides a forum for discussion. This will be a program in which I will talk to everyone from authors to athletes. My goal is to enlighten, inform and entertain. If you're boring, the party's over," he said.
Trivia file:Jackson was once a DJ. He always goes into work wearing a tie. He's recovering nicely from hip replacement surgery. Wife Alana is doing well in therapy four years after suffering a stroke. "We celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary on Oct. 16," he said.
Jackson fans can get updates on him at his www.michaeljacksontalkradio.com.
The new 1260 AM will be news-talk in daytime (up until 7 p.m.) and pop standards overnight. It replaces K-Mozart classical music, which moves to the HD2 channel on KKGO/105.1 FM. One casualty: 17-year veteran Gary Hollis. He's not on the station, but a spokesperson said, "We look forward to working with Gary on future projects with our HD2 classical format." Hollis e-mailed, "It has been an absolute pleasure doing what I did for 17 years, and for many opportunities to meet our gracious listeners. We share much love. It's been a great run, and now on to more exciting adventures."
The new 1260 AM lineup will be Larry King(a one-day delay of the TV show), 6 a.m.; "The Wall Street Journal This Morning," 7-9 a.m.; Jackson, 9-11 a.m.; Neal Boortz, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Dr. Joy Browne, 2-5 p.m.; Jackson repeat, 5-7 p.m.; pop standards music, 7 p.m.-6 a.m.
The 1260 AM signal covers Los Angeles and Orange County, and in my car, I could hear it clearly on the 405 into Costa Mesa. The station is also looking into streaming and podcasting Jackson's program.
The new Web site – www.1260.am– will go live Oct. 29. |
