Those who have met Michael Jackson regard him as a caring, shy and reclusive person. By contrast, the world’s press portrays him as a “Wacko Jocko,” obsessed with toys and children and carrying a face nearly falling apart from plastic surgery. However, it is unfair to make judgments about him merely by comparing him to normal people. In reality, his weirdness started from his poor childhood.

Michael’s singing talent was being noticed when he performed ” Climb Every Mountain” in front of his class at the age of five, which brought the house down. Later on, his father had him rehearse with his brothers’ group” The Jackson’s.” From then on, just as a miserable chimneysweeper in William Blake’s Songs of Innocence, Michael never lived a normal life as other children did. Closeted from outside world, he spent his early years touring clubs and colleges and performing up to twenty concerts a week. At the age of ten, he become one of the world’s most successful pop stars; yet, sadly having fames could not make up for his lost childhood.

At that time, there were screams of surprise from the stunned audience. Afterwards, millions of his fans from coast to coast were crazy for that incredible move and tried hard to imitate it.

In 1980s, Michael Jackson reached a climax of his career. His second album ” Thriller” was sold 47 million copies worldwide and recorded as the best selling album of all times in the Guinness Book. Some months later, he won eight Grammy Awards for the same album. The most glorious moment in his life took place as he was welcomed to the White House and awarded by the president Reagan for his long-term concern for the world, especially for children, disadvantaged groups, and our living environment. Subsequently, he wrote a significant and famous song “We Are the World” to urge the world peace.

However, life was not so sweet and smooth for Michael Jackson any more. In 1994, his entertainment business, image, and fame in musical circles were sharply ruined by a deadly strike, which was caused by an accuse of sexual abuse from a thirteen-year-old boy. Even thought the boy’s mother finally admitted that she had her son accuse Michael because she wanted to extort money from him, this case had already bitterly harmed Michael and his life. From then on, he became the target in the eye of paparazzi and led a life without privacy. To make matters worse, they liked to exaggerate things he did and made up stories of him, such as how many times he did plastic surgeries. It was totally unfair that so many Hollywood stars did nose jobs as well, but only he became the Scot goat.

However, Michael once said that but for children and animal, he would have committed suicide. In fact, he had tried to put an end to his life twice. Being a hard core fan, I wonder about who on earth cruelly forced such a great star to kill himself? The press? The fans? Or himself? Maybe I can find some clues from the last remarks of a well-known novelist, Ling-yu Ruan. She once said sadly, “Gossip is a fearful thing” and then put an end to her miserable life. Her death remains a mystery even now.
