Dear hollylovesmj,
After receiving a great number of emails today from both sides of this issue, we feel it necessary to write this letter. Please read it carefully because we want you all to understand our position.
First, to recount the events that led us here, we received several reports of inappropriate conduct on our Forum so, in order to look into the situation, the Forum was shut down for one week. During that time, we allowed a small number of regular Forum posters to point out to us, the various threads and posts that they felt were offensive. We DID NOT grant these individuals moderator status, nor have they been elevated to that position. Once we looked over the posts that they indicated were problematic, WE - not them - made the final decision. And in all of the material that they sent to us (and there was quite a lot that they took issue with), we found their objections to be mostly baseless. We removed a total of 4 posts that we found questionable. We did also remove about 5 pictures that we felt were undeniably inappropriate. That's it! Everything else was left intact, exactly as it was before we shut down!
Now, to move on to today. What we received today were emails from both sides, each one pointing out the various faults and crimes of the "other side." We understand that you all feel passionately about what you believe and about your love for Michael Jackson; and we appreciate and respect your right to defend those beliefs. But here's the thing.... MJFC is a club for Michael Jackson fans. And the MJFC Forum is a place where those fans can gather and talk about their love, admiration, respect and affection for Michael Jackson! It SHOULD be a place where we can all feel loved and accepted, no matter who we are or what we believe or what we want to talk about! If you don't want to talk about Michael and drugs, then don't go to those threads where you know that's what the fans are talking about! Likewise, if you don't want to discuss the enjoyable aspects of the Gold Pants, then don't go to those threads where you know that's what those fans are talking about!
The solution is really very simple. The Forum is plenty big enough for all of us. There is just as much room on our Forum for the deeper, introspective, sometimes uncomfortable discussions as there are for the more lighthearted, fun, sometimes sexy topics. If we are all always mindful to remain respectful of others; stay on the topic of the thread we are in, and always follow the Forum guidelines, why does it have to be either/or? Why can't we all just get along and co-exist? The MJFC moderators - GoodMusic, Lizbef, and Twinkletoes - have done an amazing job of keeping the peace and we truly appreciate all of their hard work and dedication! It wasn't until they became bombarded with all of this factional nonsense over the last several months that there has been even a hint of a problem. This leads us to believe that the problem lies, not with our moderators, but with the handful of Forum posters that, for whatever reason, just can't seem to play nice with one another and, as a result, are ruining things for everybody else.
Bottom line - EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinions, feelings and beliefs AND their right to express those opinions, feelings and beliefs! MJFC has been proud and happy to provide a place where Michael Jackson fans can safely do just that. If you are not happy on our Forum and you feel the need to find one that better suits your needs, we understand if you choose to go elsewhere.
Best,
Deborah Dannelly and the MJFC Team
