"He was, after all, a man of the people and like football itself, he entertained the world."
The controversial 'Michael' statue commissioned by Mohamed Al Fayed which was erected at Fulham Football Club in the UK and then removed in May 2014 when new owners took over the club has found a new home. ~
The National Football Museum is pleased to announce the acquisition of an important new exhibit for its permanent collection in Manchester: the statue of the entertainer Michael Jackson, "The King of Pop”.
The statue, which is larger than life-size, will be displayed on the first floor at the entrance to the main permanent gallery. Until September 2013, it was a landmark at Craven Cottage, the home of Fulham Football Club.
When the statue was removed from the ground by the new Fulham FC owners, the Museum approached the statue's owner, Mr. Mohamed Al Fayed, the former Chairman of FFC, asking if he would be prepared to loan it to the museum.
Mr. Al Fayed considered the proposal carefully, given the fact that the statue was commissioned to honour a close friend, and he generously decided to donate it to the museum.
National Football Museum Deputy Director David Pearson, said: "We are delighted to offer this famous piece a new home; it’s a great result. We are most grateful to Mr. Al Fayed for his kindness and generosity.
"The statue is a unique artefact. It tells the story at an interesting point in the history of one of England's great clubs, Fulham FC. We are in no doubt that it will provide a huge talking point with the 400,000 plus visitors who come to the museum every year."
Mr. Al Fayed said: "The National Football Museum is a splendid institution. Though still young, it is doing great work for the whole of football. When the museum approached me, I hesitated because the statue means a great deal to me and my family. But upon reflection, I decided that the statue of Michael should go to the place where it can be enjoyed by the greatest number of people and forever. I think Michael would have approved of the choice of location. He was, after all, a man of the people and like football itself, he entertained the world."
The statue is a unique addition to the National Football Museum collection, allowing the museum to represent the power of the club owner in modern football; an issue close to the heart of many fans.
The Museum also acknowledges a generous financial donation from Mr. Al Fayed that has enabled the statue to be displayed to best advantage.
*Favourite Object: The Michael Jackson statue from Fulham. It is just so different; a famous story and says so much about the relationship between club owners, fans and celebrity in the modern game.
