London 29th October - On November 15th the most famous pop star on the planet Michael Jackson will be honoured with the Diamond Award at the worlds most international music award ceremony – the World Music Awards. This year London has the honour of hosting this spectacular extravaganza in its 18th year. In the UK, C4 will broadcast the special on Wednesday, November 22nd.
International celebrities from the world of film, fashion, TV and sports will present the awards to the recording-artists who will perform live before an audience of stars, the world’s media and thousands of music fans.
Lindsay Lohan will host the show hot from her recent success as MC of Saturday Night Live on the NBC network; performing artists include Beyonce who will be opening the show with a scintillating performance of DeJa Vu. Mary J Blige will be receiving a legend award for her Outstanding Contribution to R & B Music and will be performing a medley of her greatest hits. The latest R & B sensation Rihanna will be performing S.O.S. Katie Melua; best selling European female artist of the year will also be performing along with classical heartthrob Andrea Bocelli, DJ sensation Bob Sinclair, and Britain’s best dance trip hop group Faithless. Gwen Stefani and Nelly Furtado due to be announced shortly along with other major international artists………watch this space!
Michael Jackson will be appearing on stage as part of a spectacular tribute to Thriller. 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of Thriller the world’s best selling album of all time. Thriller, produced by Quincy Jones, has sold over 50 million albums around the globe since its release in December 1982. Thriller has changed the landscape of pop music and has continued to capture the hearts and inspire people all over the world. The World Music Awards will honour Michael and his unrivalled contribution to music by honouring him with the prestigious and much coveted Diamond Award. The Diamond Award was created to honour artists who have sold over 100 million albums, which for any act is an incredible achievement. It is an award that is not presented every year because it is only for music royalty and who better to receive it than the undisputed King of Pop. To date, there are 19 operating centres in the third world including a day hospital and school on the Ivory Coast; a health centre in Orissa, India with an 24 hour ambulance service for a population of 30,000 people; a school and orphanage in Madras, India; a home for abandoned children in Brazil; a home for handicapped girls in Katukuranda, Sri Lanka; a hospital, school and village for the homeless in Madagascar; a hospital in Mokatam, Egypt; a hospital and school in Niger; a shelter, hospital and orphanage in Cameroon; a hospital in Cambodia and a hospital and school in Mali.
The 2006 World Music Awards will be just as spectacular as always. Awards will be presented to the world’s best-selling artists as well as performances from the industries biggest and brightest. Unlike many other awards shows, these awards are decided by the public as opposed to an industry panel. The World Music Awards are a reflection of genuine public opinion and are achieved by record sales. Sales figures are reported to the organization by the record companies and the national member groups of the IFPI (International Federation of Phonographic Industries).
