First BET Honors go to a stellar, diverse group
By Arienne Thompson, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Black star power shined on the nation's capital Saturday as luminaries from all walks of life came out to celebrate the inaugural BET Honors awards.
Honorees included R&B star Alicia Keys and supermodel Tyra Banks, Time Warner board chairman Richard D. Parsons and Princeton professor Cornel West.
"For me, I'm just a girl still from Harlem, and here I am," Keys said. "It's a tremendous feeling to do what you love and for people to love what you do. … People are honoring me for doing what my heart tells me to do, (and that is) so fulfilling."
R&B artist John Legend was glad to see Keys recognized. "She has had exceptional success in her career. She carries herself with such dignity and grace, and her charitable work is also really exceptional. I think she's a great entertainer and a great citizen of the world."
Dirty Sexy Money star Blair Underwood presented Keys' award, while her musical idol, Stevie Wonder, performed a rousing version of As especially for her. Legend, Wyclef Jean, Gladys Knight, Brian McKnight, Jill Scott and Raheem DeVaughn also performed.
Banks, in George Chakra, confessed that she had gained 10 pounds over the holidays, but added it's the perfect time "to eat whatever you want" without feeling guilty.
She was "touched" to be honored herself but was also proud of Parsons. "To have a black man have that much power in the entertainment industry and in publications and radio and television. … It's otherworldly."
Michael Jackson was a scheduled guest, but he pulled out of the event. (MJ本来是计划中的嘉宾,但他取消了出席) R&B star Ne-Yo wasn't feeling too bad about performing without his idol in the wings. "He has let me know a few times that he appreciates what it is that I do, and that's enough for me."(R&B明星Ne-Yo对没有能和自己的偶像一起表演,并不感觉太坏,“他已经几次让我知道他很欣赏我做的一切,这对我来说已经足够。”) |
