Top 10 Famous Faces
By Dennis O'Connell
Number 10
Tie -- Nelson Mandela
Isn't it ironic that a man who spent most of his life behind bars made the list? Well, when you consider that he went on to symbolize the fight against apartheid in South Africa on a micro-level and the struggle against racism in general on a macro-level, no, it is not all that surprising. Some may remember Nelson Mandela as a young man and others as the older gentleman that we know now.
Tie -- Pele
Some Americans may need an introduction to this man, but literally 99.5% (the other 5.7 billion people) will recognize the most popular football (or soccer) athlete ever to play the most popular sport on earth. While no one will recognize the name "Edson Arantes do Nascimento" -- they will know Pele: a man whose appearance will fill up any stadium, command the highest ratings and receive the warmest of well wishes. If Maradona was helped by the "Hand of God" in the 1986 World Cup, then surely Pele played with "the Foot of God".
Number 9
Bill Clinton
For better or worse, Bill Clinton's popularity was huge. And it was not only Americans that took notice. His time in office was largely overshadowed in the global space by his extracurricular activities. Regardless of political affiliation, Americans took an obsessive interest in the President's private affairs, but he didn't make the list because Americans took interest, he made it because the world press suddenly had something interesting to write about the Leader of the Free World.
Number 8
Cindy Crawford
Far and away the most successful model of all-time, Cindy Crawford is also the most recognizable. Whether it was her Guess? or Pepsi campaigns, this beauty with the distinguishable beauty mark propelled models into supermodels and made this perhaps the only field in which salaries for women dwarfed salaries for males. You go girl.
Number 7
Madonna
Perhaps the best female entertainer of all-time, Madonna captivated live audiences in stadiums around the world, and planted seeds and aspirations in the minds of the youngest of fans. The Material Girl has surely gone through various stages: from "virgin" (surely at some point), to bad girl vixen, to sex fiend, to spiritual mother, and she has always managed to get the press interested in more.
Number 6
Fidel Castro
Fidel and his bud Ché are definitely recognizable to most people, regardless of which political tendency they may have. While many will criticize Fidel for various reasons, the fact of the matter is that Fidel has stood the test of time against various forces, mostly American and former Cubans living abroad. And while he originally had the support and backing of the Second World -- the Communist Bloc -- today Fidel is the lone symbol of the utopian socialist nation.
Number 5
Michael Jordan
Michael Jordan is the most popular athlete, probably ever. It does help that basketball made great international strides, and that he lent his appearance and name to Nike and a horde of other products. But he got there by outplaying, outhustling, and outworking everyone else on the court. Just do it, Mike. In fact, Air Jordan is the only man who could have a hand with 6, count' em 6 fingers and still look good.

Number 4
Muhammad Ali
Fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee in the boxing ring, and do not be surprised if you get sports fans' attention. Take a stance against killing innocent people and you'll grab the attention of regular citizens. Change your religion (and your name) and get everyone's attention. That is what Muhammad Ali did then. Today, his symbol as one of the greatest athletes of all-time combined with his fight against Parkinson's will get the medical field's attention as well -- thus guaranteeing that future generations will take notice of the man "who dared you to call him Cassius Clay."
Number 3
Queen Elizabeth II
God Bless the Queen -- whether you are singing the UK national anthem or bashing skulls to the Sex Pistols tune, the Queen gets enough press to make this list hands down. The fact that her face graces most bills in the Commonwealth alone justifies her being here. With absolutely no disrespect to Her Majesty, it is safe to say that the Princess of Wales, Diana, would have given the Queen a run for her, well, "money." But she shall make another list.
Number 2
The Pope
No one person is more recognizable than the Modern Face of Catholicism: The Pope. The man can command legions of both religious and non-religious people to follow him, listen to his every single word and cling on to his every prayer. I need not say anything else.
Number 1
Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson is the most popular entertainer of all-time. And despite the various slack that he has received throughout his lifetime as a child and adult, he has touched people on all five continents with his music, his contribution to various causes and his voice. Expected to make a comeback in September, anticipate the gloved one to fill up audiences like never before.
