After a segment on Steve-O's DWTS injury, Whoopi segued into the MJ story by saying
Whoopi: "Steve-O should take a page out of Michael Jackson's book because there is no better dancer on stage, there's just NONE. He announced a 50 concert comeback tour in London and tickets for the ENTIRE tour sold out in like five hours. He went through some high profile legal trouble, as we all know, but people are still lining up. I would definitely go."
SHERRI jumps in all loud, "Um, HE was acquitted! I would go! I definitely would go!"
*laughter*
Sherri: "I'm saying that because R. Kelly had his whole trouble and I said I was not gonna go. Well, I wouldn't neccesarily go see Chris Brown right now because I don't know the story yet, but MICHAEL was acquitted. Michael was a legend--"
"IS!! Is a legend! He's STILL alive!" shout Elizabeth and Joy.
Sherri: "--IS a legend, sorry Michael, and I wanna go see him! I don't want to go see R. Kelly, though, even though-"
Joy: "What did he do?"
Sherri: "Well, he was charged with, alleged to have had sex with an underage girl and like, doing very NASTY things to her on videotape. But he got off, so-"
Joy: "Ugh."
Sherri: "But because the girl's family wouldn't testify, and I still don't wanna go."
Joy: "What about Chris Brown?"
Sherri: "Chris Brown? Would I go to his concert? Uh...probably NOT, I wanna find out what happened. But Michael Jackson--"
Whoopi: "You wouldn't go until you found out. And if it turns out that everything they said is true, I'd probably go, and say Listen. You're a BONEHEAD."
Sherri: "Because YOU could get backstage and say that to him."
Joy: "Listen, you have to separate the artist's work from what they-"
Whoopi: "From the person."
Elizabeth: "Shouldn't we be able to separate an artist from their personal life, though?"
Whoopi: "There are a lot of people who don't like what I do in my personal life but they still come to my shows."
Sherri: "But I feel like with Michael, Michael was acquitted, he went before a jury of his peers and a judge and they testified, they acquitted him, there was no evidence to say that--"
Elizabeth: "That he did anything."
Sherri: "I want to see him! I even told Janet when she was here, you know, besides you, Michael is #1 in my book. And I would like to see him. There's so much controversy surrounding him that people forget he's--"
Elizabeth: Would you still then choose to support an artist that you did believe did something wrong? Would you still go see Chris Brown if Rihanna came out with a messed up face? Whether you believe she hit him first or not?"
Sherri: "I remember Kobe Bryant went through the same thing, and people for a moment didn't support him, and then they came back-"
Whoopi: "I err on the side of what is your art and what is your personal life. My art is my art, and what I do at home...If you get arrested at home for something in your personal life, that doesn't negate your art. Picasso did some rotten stuff-- "
Elizabeth: "Its a free market, people will choose to spend their money or not-"
Whoopi: "You know what? We're gonna go. We have to go to break!"
***
Break ends, they have Gary Sinise (Lieutenant Dan from Forrest Gump) on the show.
Elizabeth: "So we were talking about MJ, and separating an artist from what they give to you artistically-"
Sherri: "would you go see an MJ concert?"
Elizabeth: "Would you go see MJ? Chris Brown?"
Gary: "A who concert??!"
Whoopi, Joy, Elizabeth: "Michael JACKSON!"
Gary: "Yeah, I'd go see Michael Jackson. He was acquitted, and I've never got to see him before, and he's one of the great performers of all time, so, yeah. I think it would all depend, you know. I don't think I'd go see OJ play football, but Michael Jackson? Yeah."
Sherri: "Well he wouldn't be playing football now, so...."
Whoopi: "He's not gonna be playing with anything...."
Whoopi: "Its funny, isn't it, that they acquitted him, too..."
Joy: "Well, not the civil case-"
Elizabeth: "But some people go on their gut instinct with these cases, and sometimes our system does get it wrong."
Gary: "I think it all depends on your personal reaction to whatever you hear."
