The shooting of the Say, Say, Say short film began on October 4th, 1983. It casts Michael Jackson & Paul Mc cartnay as conmen. The "pals" try to make a living in town as they sing their soon-to-be platinum hit. Say, Say, Say is the third 1983 video featuring Michael Jackson. Bob Giraldi, the man behind the smoking cameras of Beat It, is once again in charge of the production.
The action: early 20th century: Confirmed conmen, Jackson, Mc Cartney and his wife Linda are travelling across the country, trying to make ends meet by selling their star product, Wonder Potion, a mere breuvage that makes you realize that people were conned then, and still are today in the age of overconsommation.
The vaudeville piece shows a new side of Michael Jackson: genuinely naive and blessed with childlike grace, he falls in love with a beautiful girl (played by his sister, La Toya!) he meets at the bar. This new love has a sad ending as the "Mac & Jack" team has to leave town after the local sheriff finds out about their business and motives.
Unlike Billie Jean & Beat It, Say, Say, Say does not contain a master dance sequence. But choice of characters, direction and the elaboration of the main story makes a difference with "other" videos. Even if Jackson & Mc Cartney plays Music Hall "vedettes" at the end of the short film (this is a direct tribute to the great performers of early 20th century like Maurice Chevalier), the story itself could have been a valuable starting point for a feature film. One can parallel the frivolous lifestyle of the characters to the light and romantic lyrics of the song: the tune is just about a casual love story, using the famous "run & hide" scheme.
Regarding Say, Say, Say (a few facts): The shooting of the short film took place at the Sycamore Ranch. Michel Jackson brought the estate in 1988 and transformed it to create Neverland. Hardcore fans have noticed that the video also casts director Bob Giraldi as one of the billiards-players. - Say, Say, Say the short film, won the Festival du clip in St Tropez (France, 1984) and was listed #4 on Billboard's Top Ten Video (1984).
