When Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' was released as a single by Epic Records in May 1983, its destiny was to win the fans' and the public's hearts. As the track is also the opener of the THRILLER album, it didn't take long to understand that this song was just another Michael Jackson's classic, a track the King of Pop wrote and eventually co-Produced.
Michael Jackson wrote Wanna Be Startin' Sometin' during the Off The Wall sessions. As it often happens, a track can sometimes have a huge potential but does not instantly make it on the current project Michael Jackson works on. It actually all depends of the edge and sound he has in mind for his album.
However, Startin' Somethin' was to be back back in the studio pretty soon, as Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones resumed work on THRILLER: "I had finished some songs on my own, but I didn't give them to Quincy until I saw what had come in from other writers. The first song I had was Startin' Somethin', which I had written when we were doing Off The Wall but had never given to Quincy for that album. Sometimes I have a song I've written that I really like and I just can't bring myself to present it". (Taken from Moonwalk, Michael Jackson, 1988).
Even though the song was released as a single without any video support, it eventually rocked the Top 40 and made it to the Top 10 (# 5). Way back in 1983, charts were ruled by a Michael Jackson barometer: each song entering the Top set the bar and showed hot and intense summer was. This was a MJ's world: Beat It and Startin' Somethin' woud eventually cross each other in the Top 10. And it was just the beginning...
As obvious the success of Startin' Somethin' was, Epic decided to re-release the song on his INSTANT CLASSICS collection: undisputed hits received extended life and exposure on the market through this collection. Special price and top-list selection of songs encouraged the public to buy the singles [again] and helped keep fans and collectors satisfied. 5 of the 7 singles taken from THRILLER were released on Epic's Instant Classics label: BILLIE / JEAN / BEAT IT / P.Y.T. / THE GIRL IS MINE & WANNA BE STARTIN' SOMETHIN'. The song has been sampled a thousand times (Michael Jackson's tour guitarist Jennifer Batten also covered it in 1992), and Startin' Somethin' happens to be a strong ode to paranoia. This theme has gradually taken more and more importance in some of Michael Jackson's works. You can't ignore the darkness of the lyrics and the strength of the bouncing and breath-taking beat. The contrast is cool and captivates everyone's attention. Michael fights against rumours... Billie Jean plays her game... But it doesn't, matter: the last lines of he song say it all: "No one can hurt you now.... 'Cause you know what's true... Yes I believe in me, so you believe in you..."
This Power-Jackson cut has become a MJ tours most memorable moment. Michael Jackson & his brothers first performed Startin' Somethin' on the Victory Tour (1984). The song remains the ultimate opener of both Victory and BAD tours. Jackson couldn't help but keep the song, let it grow on stage and transform it in a sheer moment of cool improvisation and funky trained routine. Solid basic structure and dazzling dance steps: the magic combination of both elements helped startin' Somethin' to become a cornerstone of Michael Jackson's live shows.
Watching Jackson performing that song reminds us to what extent the man breathes dance: every move, performed with great sense of precision and dissection, and his soul heavenly inspired: all of that enables him to share his deepest questions with the public through an eternal dance... The kind of dance that sets you free... We're talking about salvation here.
